GIS (Geographical Information Systems)
GIS (Geographical Information Systems) provide a single source solution for viewing, analysing and manipulating spatial data and geographical information. It is a powerful tool for the planning and management of infrastructure assets.
One of the main features of a GIS is the ability to attach database information to spatial features e.g. a drainage pipe or gas main. Each feature type is represented by a layer. Layers of information are added to the GIS and they are then viewable from one source, allowing easier management and interrogation of data.
Numerous types of data can be used in a GIS – geological data, utilities, site work areas, Ordnance Survey mapping, pylons, road networks, postal codes and other spatial features (both above and below ground). Any additional data can be layered into the system (such as voice recordings, video footage and photographs) depending on the specification required by the client.
Data is captured in the field using rugged hardware and software specific for GIS data collection. A variety of digital data collection methods can be used e.g. GPS (Global Positioning Systems), Total Station lasers or Disto.
GIS allows real world and real time scenarios to be modelled, giving relevant data to the user more effectively than non-geographic solutions. 40SEVEN can provide data in a number of GIS packages and over the internet on the GIS DataView web site.
40SEVEN can provide a number of GIS solutions for your industry sector. GIS can be used in the following:
Utilities – mapping the position and condition of assets, maintenance and modelling of asset networks, asset management of utilities
Local Government – planning control, estate management, public transport, contaminated land management and remediation.
Universities – Estate management
Environmental – modelling pollution events, risk mapping, contaminated land mapping, environmental impact assessment and pollution incident response plan.
Transportation / Logistics – routing analysis of data (shortest-path and fastest route between sites)

40SEVEN can supply data to the client in the following GIS data formats:
• ESRI Shapefile
• ESRI Personal GeoDatabase
• MapInfo TAB/MIF file
• Open Geospatial Consortium GML, WFS, WMS
• PostGIS spatial database
• Google Earth KML
• Microsoft MapPoint / Autoroute
40SEVEN can also supply data over the web. The GIS DataView service is provided to clients who do not need or have a full GIS system, but require the extra ‘intelligence’ of attributed data. Using an Internet browser, clients can obtain user-specific data delivered direct to their desktop or portable PC

40SEVEN provide the following GIS services:
- Mapping Services
- Cartographic Production
- Web GIS Development
- Geo-Referenced Video Production
- CAD to GIS Conversion
- GPS Surveys
- Spatial Analysis
- 3D GIS Development
- Road network routing and route planning
